bio.
international grey formed in the summer of 2009 when jeremy and denver moved to portland, oregon. jeremy, denver, and george had all previously collaborated together as allegra gellar but with the addition of daniel on drums, a new hometown, and a new sound, it seemed time to take on a new moniker as well. in addition to music each band member is active in some form of visual art, design, digital retouching, illustration, photography, painting, or video. for years dan and jeremy have been working together running a digital illustration and retouching company called danklife. so, it is only fitting that the name, international grey, is taken from a scene in the documentary, “helvetica”, about fonts and design.
the group spent six months in a basement studio, alternating between working and writing new music before heading into the studio to record. international grey is inspired equally by older shoegaze/post-punk (my bloody valentine, slowdive, wire, 4AD), newer indie-rock (pinback, american analog set, low, calla), films (hal hartley, wong kar wai) and modern literature (douglas coupland, kevin canty, haruki murakami). the sound that has emerged is a full and rich blending of organic and synthetic textures, alternating between machine like droning and post-rock dynamics topped with intimate vocals detailing admittedly personal, mostly autobiographical stories.
international grey is no longer active. shit happens.
